If you have spent any time running cattle in West Texas, you know not to count on the rain.Some years, you find yourself hoping for any sign of rain. Then, suddenly, a late-summer shower can sweep in and bring a worn-out pasture back to life. The grass turns green, bare spots fill in, and everyone starts asking the same question.
Should I reseed this pasture while I have moisture?
Maybe.
September is often a good time for reseeding and improving pastures, but it is not a guaranteed fix. Just because the grass turns green does not mean planting seed will pay off. Before spending money on seed, fuel, and labor, make sure your pasture is ready, there is enough moisture, and you can protect new seedlings once they sprout.
That is the difference between growing a healthy pasture and just feeding expensive seed to the birds.
Reseeding can help fill in thin pastures, cover bare spots, add more types of forage, and lower your need for hay and supplements later. But it only works if timing, soil contact, seed selection, and grazing management all come together.
